Privacy Policy

GetGarage is a marketplace for booking car service in Vancouver. This page explains what we collect, why we collect it, who else sees it, and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to be read, not to be skimmed past.

What we collect when you book

You do not need an account to book. When you do book, the form asks for the following, and we store it against that booking:

  • Your name
  • Your phone number
  • Your email address — we send the confirmation and cancel link there
  • Your vehicle's year, make and model
  • Anything you type into the note field, which is optional
  • The service you picked and the time you picked

All of it goes to the garage you booked with. They need it to do the work and to reach you if something changes. We use your phone number and email only to send you messages about that booking — confirmation, reminder, and cancellation. We do not send marketing.

We record the search that led to your booking

This one is worth calling out on its own, because it is not obvious. When a booking comes from a search on this site, we store the search term you typed, how you arrived (marketplace search, a direct link, a search engine, or an ad), and any campaign tag on the link. We show that to the garage.

We do this so a shop can see which listings actually bring them work, rather than guessing. It is attached to the booking, not to you as a person, and we do not build a profile of your searching across visits.

Location, if you use “near me”

The “near me” button asks your browser for your coordinates and uses them to sort garages by distance. Your browser will ask permission first, and nothing happens if you decline.

Two things to know. Those coordinates go into the page address, at roughly one-metre precision — so they appear in the URL you can see, and in ordinary server logs. And we do not store them against you or keep them after the search.

They are also stripped out of every address before it reaches anyone else. Our error reporting and, where it is switched on, our analytics both receive the page you were on with the coordinates removed.

The waitlist

If you join the waitlist we store which side of the marketplace you joined as, a driver or a shop owner, and one way to contact you — an email address or a phone number. Nothing else.

If you run a garage

Shop owners sign in with an email address, which we use to authenticate you and to send you booking notifications. Your shop's name, address, phone number, hours, services and prices are published on purpose — that is the listing.

Where your data is stored

Our database runs in Oregon, in the United States. If you are in British Columbia, your personal information is stored and processed outside Canada. While it is there it is subject to United States law, including lawful access requests by US authorities. We would rather tell you this plainly than bury it.

Who else handles it

We use a small number of service providers, and only for what each one is named for. This list is generated from what this site actually loads, so it cannot fall behind the code:

  • Supabase — the database and the shop-owner sign-in system, hosted in Oregon — we call them from our servers
  • Vercel — hosts the site and keeps standard server logs — your browser connects to them directly
  • Resend — sends the emails — we call them from our servers
  • Twilio — sends the text messages — we call them from our servers
  • Clerk — signs you in if you create a driver account, and keeps you signed in — your browser connects to them directly
  • Mapbox — draws the maps, including the area of the map you are looking at — your browser connects to them directly
  • Google — the source of the star ratings and shopfront photos on listings. We fetch these from our own server, so Google is never told which listing you looked at — we call them from our servers
  • Google Analytics — counts page views so we can see which pages get used, and sets cookies to do it. Booking links and map coordinates are stripped out of every address before it is sent — your browser connects to them directly
  • Sentry — tells us when the site breaks. Deliberately configured to receive no personal information: form contents are dropped, booking links and coordinates are stripped out of addresses, and there is no session recording — your browser connects to them directly

That last part matters. Where your browser connects to a service directly, that service can see your IP address. Where we call it from our own servers, it never sees you at all.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers.

Cookies

We set cookies for 3 things, and only these:

  • keeping a signed-in shop owner signed in
  • keeping a signed-in driver signed in, if you make an account
  • counting page views in Google Analytics

The analytics cookies count visits. They tell us which pages get used so we know what to fix; they are not used to advertise to you, and we do not share what they collect with an advertising network. Before any address is sent, we strip out the parts that identify you — your booking link and any map coordinates never leave your browser.

You can refuse them. Blocking cookies in your browser, or a tracker blocker, stops them; nothing on this site needs them to work, and booking is unaffected.

How long we keep it

A booking is a business record for the garage that took it, so bookings are kept. If you want yours deleted, email us and we will remove it, unless the shop needs it for a live appointment or the law requires us to keep it.

Your rights

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act, you can:

  • Ask what we hold about you, and get a copy
  • Ask us to correct anything wrong
  • Withdraw your consent, and ask us to delete what we hold
  • Complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. For anything that meaningfully changes what we do with your information, we will say so rather than quietly editing the page.
