What brake work involves

Usually replacing the brake pads, and resurfacing or replacing the rotors they clamp onto. Pads are a wear item and are expected to be replaced several times over a car’s life; rotors are not always replaced with them.

Signs you may need it

  • A high squeal when braking — on most cars that is the wear indicator doing its job
  • Grinding or a metallic scrape: stop driving and get it looked at, the pad material is gone
  • The pedal pulses or the wheel shudders under braking, which usually points at the rotors
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake, or the pedal feels soft or travels further than it used to

What to ask the shop

  • Is this quote per axle or for all four corners? Front and rear are separate jobs
  • Are the rotors being replaced, machined, or reused — and why?
  • Can you show me the measured pad thickness against the minimum spec?
  • Is the brake fluid being checked or changed at the same time?
