What a diagnostic involves

Time on the car to find out what is wrong. A shop reads the stored fault codes, then tests to work out which of the several possible causes is the actual one. The code narrows the search; it is not the answer on its own.

Signs you may need it

  • The check engine light is on, flashing, or came on and went away again
  • A warning light you do not recognise, or several at once
  • The car runs, idles or shifts differently and you cannot say why
  • A noise, smell or vibration you can reproduce but not place

What to ask the shop

  • What is the diagnostic fee, and is it credited against the repair if I go ahead?
  • How long are you booking for — diagnostics are sold in time, not in parts
  • Can you tell me the fault code and what you ruled out?
  • Will you call me with a quote before doing any repair work?

A flashing check engine light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter within minutes of driving. Steady is “book it in soon”; flashing is “stop driving and call”.
